If the enemy gets a shot at the larger profile from abouve the commander can roll or pitch the ship to present it's smaller profile to the enemy again. about the only way for an enemy ship to get a shot at the larger profile side of te ship is for several ships to gang up on it and hit it from multiple angles at once.
The plot, however is too open to say something about it. It reminds me somehow of the Navis series. Also, a young, healthy human boy inside a ship full of sexy elvish girls who see males as "weak reproductive partners"...
