Stars in Shadow: Arid Planet Test Renders by AriochIV Stars in Shadow: Arid Planet Test Renders by AriochIV
In-game planet textures for Sven Olsen's starship combat game project (same as ship designs here).

This is a Lightwave test render of my Photoshop-painted texture for the Cold/Arid (Mars-like) planet type. The game displays solar systems with rotating 3D planets. I tried to strike a balance between exaggerated but relatively realistic details and an obviously hand-painted style.

Oh very nice. They look painterly but convincing at the same time. I love the warm desert colors. I can see you used Mars for a reference, but still kept this fictional-looking enough. I also wondered if you were using Kharak as an inspiration as well? :D

Nope, just looked at Mars references. Hot-desert will probably be a different planet type.

Oh, cool. I do like the Mars similiarities, certainly. As for the hot-desert....heh, Arrakis/Kharak type, then? Green at the poles for where there'd be some farming and water?

Possibly. There will be "exploitation" graphics on separate layers that indicate growing populations and infrastructure, things like cities, irrigations, mining scars, and such. Haven't done these for the Mars yet. I'm currently sitting in the computer-timeout corner waiting for my replacement computer to arrive in the mail, websurfing on my PS3.

Ouch. I've been there not long ago myself, having to borrow my mom's laptop and living in art-deprivation until I had something I could plug back into the Cintiq. It ultimately turned out that the PSU shorted the old puter's innards out, including the HD. So I lost a chunk of data too. Bleh. I was hoping to just have to replace a video card or something, but nope.

So I definitely know the feeling. Best of luck with the restoration process. >_>;;

Really well done. I remember when I was teaching myself how to 3D model using lightwave, I tried making a few planets. I made an OK Saturn, but I never really figured out how to make good looking textures for the other planets. Actually I just sucked at textures. But you don't!

It's definitely a tribute to your art that even seeing these planet renders makes me want to start playing RIGHT NOW. :)

Thanks. Hopefully it won't be too long until you will be able to play it.

Just like Planet Mars or Planet Arrakis!

I'm guessing that Arrakis doesn't have quite as much ice at the poles. :D
