Design sketches for the Stars in Shadow game project.
The Ashdar are a reptiloid race (composed of at least two sub-species: the plucky Teros [pictured], and the taller Haduir) whose forebears once commanded a galaxy-spanning empire prior to the collapse of the warp lanes. As interstellar travel is restored, the remnants of this empire are now scattered factions. The colonial faction, led by Praetor Yunki, has established a new capital on the garden world of Rastaban. The Ashdar are superb pilots and have an affinity for carrier warfare.
As the Humans in this setting are a somewhat extreme group, the Ashdar (despite being Space Dinosaurs) serve the role of the protagonist or "normal" race.
Cool. I like the variety of ships here. I'd think the variety of carriers comes from their affinity and thus specializing the carriers quite a bit to suit that affinity?
Yes, but most of these concepts didn't make it into the game. The Asdhar have three carrier hulls (CVE, CVL, CVA), which is just one more than most of the races have.
Makes sense. You've got enough here to suggest they do one of those gigantic backstory books like Homeworld had...? Or at least a really cool collected PDF of background/fluff? I remember Relic had the HW manual as a PDF. That way some of the work that you put into all this backstory stuff like planets, aliens, and alien psychology can go into something the players can have fun with? You could suggest it as DLC for later, maybe?
There's some of that kind of information that will go into the in-game documentation, but I'm not sure at this point how much there will be. There's a lot that probably won't make it into the initial release.
Yeah. If there's one thing I'm learning it's that the scope of the thing in the artist's head as they build the whole world is a lot bigger than the scope of the story being told. And I've had a sense for a while that it's probably really good worldbuilding - that the world is bigger than the story within it being told. Because then the world feels bigger, and immersive that way. So that's probably a good thing.
I hope you guys do well with this, what with all the work going into the game.
Interstellar race or no, bit odd to see such a variety of carrier vessels.
