Stars in Shadow: Gremak Design Thumbnails by AriochIV Stars in Shadow: Gremak Design Thumbnails by AriochIV
Design sketches for the Stars in Shadow game project.

The Gremak are the "bad actors" of the region, raiding other civilizations for plunder and slaves. Aggressive and arrogant, they enslaved the other sentient race native to their homeworld (the Enfi), and have since become deeply convinced of their own natural superiority to other species. Gremak can reproduce very quickly, but often few survive to adulthood, as both eggs and young are at times used as a food source. However, despite these penchants for conquest and cannibalism, Gremak society strongly emphasizes social graces, and so individual Gremak are exceedingly polite and even charming.

Gremak ships are equipped with a distortion field which makes them more difficult to track at long range, increasing their ability to get in close for raids or short-range attacks.

I couldn't help noticing that the Phidi ship shown in the sketchdump wasn't used in the final ships. I think it would make a better idea for a Gremak fighter.

Also it would be cool if the player could choose their own pattern and color schemes for their Gremak fleet.

Love what you have here, keep up the good work

That's a good idea; the first-pass Phidi design does look a bit like the F3 fighter concept. I'll keep that in mind during the next design pass.

The game supports multiple color schemes, but there will be time and resource restrictions on how many options will be available to the player in the initial release. It looks like the Gremak may have multiple factions, so we'll have to wait and see how that plays out in terms of graphics assets.

And thanks. :D

An entire race of slaving, raiding, cannibalizing, warlike and potentially genocidal sociopaths. Really adds variety to Hawkfleet so far.

May I ask when can we expect to see more Gremak ships?

I think this set represents most of the Gremak ship types that are likely to be in the game. If you mean when will you see the finished ship graphics: I will probably start on them as soon as I've finished the Yoral capital ships.

Great! I look forward to it. =) By the way, the Yorals are those aliens from that ice planet, with durable but short-range warships, yes?

Another great looking fleet, I really like the brown/orange 'tiger stripe' color pattern.  Will ship colors be subjected to some selection during the game?  Also what is the 'venting' the ship is doing in the lower right corner?

The ship graphics files are layered so as to support multiple different color schemes, and there are some ship recolors (mostly Ashdar) currently being used in the game as placeholders, but I don't know what sort of color options will be available to the player. Several of the races will probably have multiple factions. There are also probably going to be side groups (mercenaries, pirates, etc.) which ideally would also have different color schemes.

The calliope-like pipes on the Gremak ships are meant to be some kind of cooling system, which vents gas to release heat. I figure that a cloaking system would mean storing up all your heat emissions while the system is active, and so the idea is that there's a venting as part of the de-cloaking animation. It's possible that it just may steam a bit at regular intervals during combat; we're trying to add as many distinctive animations (blinking lights, rippling water, pulsating power systems) as we can.
