Stars in Shadow: Logo Concepts by AriochIV Stars in Shadow: Logo Concepts by AriochIV
The independent game project formerly code-named "Hawkfleet" now has an official name: "Stars in Shadow."

I am exercising my feeble graphic design skills with some test logos. These will go on the website and presumably anything else associated with the game. Any feedback is appreciated. There is a poll here:…

I like A, G, and F, personally. I'd love to be more specific than that, but I honestly can't. I don't know WHY I like them so much. I just do.

Also is this why Outsider's been on hiatus? They must be keeping you busy! Which is fine, if inconvenient for me. I gotta know what happens next, but you REALLY gotta eat, so it's all fine.

Myself, I'm partial to a combination based around "D", "E" and "F". I really like the writing and the cartouche on the "E" logo, but, as you rightly say, the eclipse effect, while spectacular, isn't very "logo-like" and needs to be stylised more.

I was going to suggest a simple white ring around the middle black circle with a white dot to symbolize the starburst, but I did a quick mock-up and it ended up too reminiscent of the logo from the movie "The Ring", so I then added a yellow-orange dot as well. Long story short, after playing with it for a bit I ended up with, well, this.

I hope you don't think it too rude of me that I'm suggesting things when you've only asked for feedback on your existing designs, but my mind does have a tendency to run away with me on everything design related.

Thanks for taking the time to offer suggestions!

The current plan is to go with the D/E version, with some more stylized variants of the central eclipse for applications that might require something simpler.

My pleasure!

Sounds like a good plan, "D" and "E" really look the best and have the most impact.

The whole game looks really interesting and your art is striking, as usual. I liked the way you managed to combine a "hand drawn" look with CG. I can't wait for it to come out.

I'm really happy this project now has a name. I just had some thoughts seeing these logos,

A feels conservative, though I like the planet. B and C's fonts remind me of star wars and the symbol on the left hand side rather than right appears unique.

D and E remind me of Zork Nemesis (and italics are not the way to go, so TNG.) G reminds me of another 4x game whose name currently escapes me.

F, the symbol, is that supposed to be a star compass? Well I like that symbol the most out of all of them.

This is going to be a bit in-depth as I spot a few things going on with the fonts that might require you to make some more variations.

The biggest issue for me is that as much as I LOVE futuristic and sci-fi fonts, they've got a habit of stylizing things so much that suddenly A's and W's (among other letters) start to get harder and harder to read as such. Unsteady Oversteer, one of my all-time favorite sci-fi fonts is very guilty of this, but is still readable because they've taken the angle of reducing a sans-serif letters to some interesting block shapes that prove readable enough.

The other thing is the graphic. The stylized planet in the first logo is a great idea, and not what I would've expected for a game logo. The updated-graphics nerd in me likes the eclipse in D and E best. However if you ever have to do reverse-color graphics (Black and white logo on white paper, for instance manual PDFs and the like), something like that eclipse image might have problems translating. I'm not too keen on the star-shaped one as it looks a little too easily put-together and isn't quite unique enough.

That having been said - I like D and E the best.

That's because of the combination of things going on there: the centralized logo which becomes symbolic for the game (Remember Homeworld's Angel Moon logo?) and the words bracketing it in a fairly compressed space that in my head, works well with cover graphics, the top of any manual pages, or a webpage.  In general, it would make a good header, and just be easily worked into graphics without forcing a big block of space to be left for it, unlike A and B. They just feel a bit...big.

I was a cinema/animation major in uni, and one of the things that comes from the graphic design affinity I have, is a sort of preference towards things that are quickly and easily readable - be it a scene or a grpahic. In the case of a logo, I've always been of the mind that it needs to be fairly readable at a glance as one of the first symbols anyone sees of a product. The lettering has to be readable, and the graphic as part of it needs to also stand out.

That's why I like the eclipse image in D and E, and the planet in A best. They stand out as a little different from the norm. Same for the font in D and E, even if it stylizes the W's a bit more than I'd prefer. The A's and W's are more readable visually to me than in G's lettering. I'm just picky that way - that may be more a preference thing that varies from viewer to viewer than anything serious.

I hope these ramblings give you some ideas and insights on what to tweak, and what might be working in these graphics. Best of luck. A logo's not an easy thing by a long shot. If it's anything, I think you did a great job with Outsider's logo and typeface - both stand out in my mind and are very symbolic to the comic.

Thanks for the feedback. My current feeling is that D/E is the best combination of readability, originality and visual interest. What I'm experimenting with now is more-complicated and less-complicated versions, and in particular a more stylized version of the eclipse logo that would be more flexible, but not as simplistic as the versions in B, F and G.

You're welcome. :) I felt a bit awkward, but wanted to give something more in-depth than just "wow" because I had a feeling you were wanting somebody to at least spot the parts that would be harder to see from the creator side of them.

Also, sweet choices. I was thinking D and E were your best bets at a logo that combined all the traits you needed. There's a quality to them that beats out the others for me (issues in consideration).

I think continuing to tweak the logo is a good idea. Cause I think that eclipse won't translate to some media, like black and white images and so on. But the concept of it is good, and I think it'll work out for you.

Best of luck with it all!
