Stars in Shadow: Weapons And Shot Effects by AriochIV Stars in Shadow: Weapons And Shot Effects by AriochIV
Artwork for the Stars in Shadow game project.

These are weapon assets for the Human fleet, and some shot effect concepts.

In the game, you research technologies that unlock increasingly larger ship hulls and increasingly more sophisticated weapons. Each hull contains varying number and sizes of empty hardpoints, in which the player can place their choice of weapons that they've researched. Some weapons have heavy or point defense ("PD") variants. For a simplified view of the weapon tech tree see here

Each race will have its own set of weapon visuals, though some of the individual items may be recolors of this generic set. Some races will also have unique weapons.

Weapon Types Description

Weapon damage is classified into four basic types:
  • Heat: basic beam damage type, can be countered by special conductive or ablative armor; damage decreases with range
  • Kinetic: projectiles such as coilguns or railguns are shield-piercing weapons; damage is constant with range but hit chance falls off rapidly with range
  • Explosive: missiles and plasma weapons have explosive effects that can splash across shields and damage armor
  • Charged: electrically charged weapons like ion beams can cause additional internal damage
The damage types of different weapons and their placement in the tech tree can be seen at the bottom of this image.

Notes on Individual Weapon Systems (keeping in mind that everything is still subject to change):

Laser: basic tier 1 beam weapon
Turbolaser: advanced tier 2 laser; alternative to ion beam
X-ray laser: armor-piercing laser variant
Disruptor: causes additional crew casualties
Ion Beam: tier 2 charged beam
Neutron Beam: can cause crippling effects
Fusion Beam: advanced tier 3 beam weapon
Plasma Cannon: tier 2 heavy explosive beam
Hellbore: tier 3 advanced explosive beam
Force Beam: tier 3 kinetic beam weapon
Stellar Surge Beam: tier 4 ultra-tech doom star weapon

Atomic Missile: tier 0 explosive projectile
Coilgun: tier 1 kinetic weapon
Fusion Missile: tier 1 explosive projectile
Railgun: tier 2 longer-ranged kinetic weapon
Antimatter Missile: tier 2 explosive projectile
Pulson: tier 3 energy torpedo
Black Hole Projector: tier 4 ultra-tech projectile

(edit 7/10/14: added third-tier weapons.)

I noticed that the hellbore force beam and neutron beam have no effect pictures yet. I don't suppose you could make a tech list that describes what each weapon is, what it fires and how it works people tend to enjoy that kind of stuff. I know I love a good tech page with my weapons!!! :)

I would also be willing to help write a tech page if you are interested?

There is a hellbore shot effect concept near the bottom of the image above, and the neutron beam would be "ion beam 2". However, these are just concepts, and haven't yet been implemented in game (currently all beam weapons share a generic graphic). The actual effects will be procedural, coded by Sven.

The weapon types are still under development, and so things may change, but I will add a brief overview in the description above. More detailed information will be available on the website when it is ready.

Cool, I just like descriptions of weapons and tech. Makes it seem more authentic. :)

I look forward to the wedsite.

I rather like this. The weapon effects are easily identified by their brightness, shape, and color.

Just a guess - are these ordered by level of damage they dish out? Lowest at top, highest at bottom? Because I can imagine a black-hole projector being pretty high on the science tree....

They're ordered roughly by damage type and depth in the tech tree. The black hole projector is at the "superscience" extreme end of the tech tree.

That -was- the impression I was getting, so cool. Eh, it's just from playing RTS like Hegemonia, Homeworld, and assorted stuff like Sins of a Solar Empire. Black Hole tech would definitely be at the top of a tech tree, so that was why I was wondering when it went from "conventional" lasers to high-end tech. :D

And it's awesome seeing this kind of variety. Hegemonia wasn't the best of RTS, but one thing it did pretty well, along with Sins of a Solar Empire, was varying the tech by races, as well as tech tree depth, and increasing the power and damage of those tech as time went on.  Sins I think was even better at that. Got to be a bit of a pain in the ass to get to one of the superweapons, cause it wasn't cheap, and took FOREVER to research, but definitely worth it. Especially some of those insane psionic ones for the Advent. Muahaha. (The Advent were my favorites. Cyborg space elf-types with psi powers? Eeee.)

God I've had way too much caffiene....

Each race is getting different set of turret designs?  This game has incredible attention to detail!

That's the goal, provided there's enough time to do them all. ;)

i really like the trail effect of the railgun!

Wonderful work.
Great variety and detail.

Neat!  Makes me want to try to make mini physical models of them.  Not like I have the time, but still...

Shaped nuclear charge: focusing the lump sum of an atomic blast into a single stream?
Electron laser?

is there a possible future weapon I missed?
ahh, the Tesla cannon.

Some especially diamagnetic materials in a cannon shape for your barrel.
Jellied Helium to keep it cool, say -432*.
and inside at the base of the barrel... The mother of all tesla coils.
A massive discharge of energy from some ultracapcitors pumps through the coil - dumping a literal lightning bolt into the barrel.
a bolt that can only travel coherently in one direction.

This is awesome!
Great work!

Love these weapons.

Don't forget gamma-ray lasers!

First, love what you've got here, I would personally have added th missile detonations as well but I can't judge

Second, I am curious what PD means

Third, what's a hardpoint?
AriochIV Featured By Owner Nov 26, 2013   Digital Artist
PD stands for "point defense." They're light weapons specialized for firing at missiles or fighters.

Hardpoints are attachment points on the ship hull for weapons. Some are fixed, providing a limited firing arc, and some are turreted, allowing for a wider field of fire.

Plus, Black Hole Projector, LOVE IT!!

considering that those who feared that the Large Hadron Collider would destroy earth with a micro black hole, then applying a Very remotely futuristic version of that technology to weaponry is only a logical step. So, yeah. Black hole bullets.
