Star Harpies are the first "space monster" being implemented in Stars in Shadow.
Star Harpies live in debris belts, using their corrosive plasma jets both to propel themselves through space and to feed on the ice and organic minerals of comets and asteroids. They are most often found in uninhabited systems, as the activity of starships seems to make them cranky. If disturbed by nearby starships, or if they find themselves in proximity to more nutritious food sources (like colony food stores or the colonists themselves) they can become extremely aggressive and attack. Roughly the size of a light cruiser and able to spray their plasma at close range, they are potentially quite dangerous, especially when they attack in packs. Though Harpies are found in numerous systems throughout the local region and periodically appear in new locations, they don’t seem to have any obvious mechanism by which they could move from one star to another. Some scientists theorize that the Harpies may have a method of slipping into hyperspace, and ride the warp lanes from one system to another… though this has never been observed. It's also not known how they reproduce, and so others suggest that they might lay eggs which are unwittingly carried by starships from one system to another, though again there is no direct evidence to support this idea. There are legends of a gigantic Harpy Queen that moves between systems creating nests and laying eggs, but this notion is generally dismissed as nonsense.
